Job Description

1. BACKGROUND TO THE ASSIGNMENT: International Medical Corps (IMC) has launched a new project in the Central African Republic (CAR), funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The project, “Saving lives, building resilience, providing integrated maternal and newborn health and VAWG services in humanitarian settings”, is implemented in Bria and Ndele health districts . Key activities include: Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) services through mobile and static clinics. Raising awareness of pregnancy danger signs and promoting rapid referral via local leaders and associations. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) prevention and response services management and prevention Repairing obstetric fistulas and reintegrating survivors into society, with surgeries conducted at Bria Referral Hospital. Currently, fistula surgeries are performed by a Ministry of Health team based in Bangui and deployed across the country. The Consultant Gynecologist/Surgeon will provide technical support and capacity building to this team, ensuring sustainable skills transfer and improved outcomes for women affected by fistula 2. PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT: The consultant will build the capacity of surgical and clinical staff from the Ministry of Health and Population in the Central African Republic on fistula repair techniques. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and skills transfer, the consultant will strengthen the ability of healthcare providers to deliver quality fistula repair services, resulting in improved patient outcomes, reduced postoperative complications, and the sustainable development of local expertise within the facility. The consultant will deliver specialized training and mentorship to Ministry of Health surgeons and allied staff engaged in fistula repair. The role emphasizes capacity building, surgical excellence, and knowledge transfer to strengthen national fistula repair services. 3. SCOPE OF THE ASSIGNMENT: Training and Mentorship Conduct theoretical sessions on fistula etiology, diagnosis, and surgical procedures involving MoH staff (surgeons and medical staff) in Bangui capital city and Bria regional hospital Deliver hands-on surgical training in fistula repair procedures Provide technical support and supervision to MoH staff during live surgeries to ensure safe practice. Provide mentorship and coaching to junior surgeons, nurses, and anesthetists . Capacity Building Develop standardized training materials and surgical protocols in line with the host country and international protocols. Train MoH staff on pre-operative and post-operative care specific to fistula patients. Introduce best practices for infection prevention and patient safety. Knowledge Transfer Establish a system for ongoing peer learning and skill reinforcement. Recommend further training needs and advanced skill development pathways 4. Requirements Essential Desirable Qualifications (Indicate Degree/Certificated required) The candidate must be qualified Obstetrician/Gynecologist and surgeon A minimum of 3 years of surgical/gynec ological experience in the fistula repair area. Surgeon with significant relevant experience in Fistula repair . Experience (Identify specific experiences that are necessary for this position. For example, experience using certain systems / method or experience in a certain sector) The candidate must be competent to perform a wide range of fistula repairs: Simple fistula repair: Competence and confidence in managing straightforward cases. Complex fistula repair: Ability to manage complicated fistulas, including recto-vaginal and complex vesico-vaginal fistulas Competency List technical expertise and soft skills required. Not exceeding 7 points The candidate must be skilled in the entire process, from patient selection and preparation to surgical treatment and meticulous post-operative care, including correctly assessing surgical outcomes. Being formally trained as a trainer and possess specific teaching and communication skills would be a key asset. Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
